As you may know, New York State recently mandated that all
public schools test their water to verify that the water is safe for students.
Specifically, schools are required to test all water access points to verify
that the amount of lead in the water is at a safe level (less than 15 parts per
billion).
We completed our water testing at the end of last month and
recently received our test results for the District. In all our buildings on
campus, we had 61 access points test above the maximum limit allowed to be
considered safe for drinking. We tested a total of 198 locations. The high lead
areas are mainly in the main building and include classroom sinks, science lab
worktables, and showerheads in the boys’ and girls’ locker rooms. A detailed
report will be posted to our website.
All areas of concern are signed or shutoff as appropriate.
We are working on resolving the problem areas, which mainly involves replacing
fixtures where the lead tests were high. We also notified, or will notify, the
appropriate local and state agencies as required. A copy of the report may be found here: http://www.salemcsd.org/cms/One.aspx?portalId=145978&pageId=4163693.
We continue to make the safety a priority at our school. If
you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact my office.
