We are excited to announce that we were the recipient of a Lowe’s Toolbox for Education Grant from the Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation (LCEF) in the amount of $5,000. The grant has been used to create work areas within the junior/senior high school library to meet the needs of 21st-century learners.

The grant included $500 for iPads and Apps, $3650 for seating arrangements, $350 for a rug, and $600 for makerspace items.

“The ultimate goal is to provide a welcoming environment for learning, collaborating, and reading,” said Salem Librarian, Karen Fronhofer. “We want to promote information literacy, digital literacy, and a lifelong habit of reading and being informed users of information,” says Fronhofer.

The new work areas provide a comfortable, quiet reading space as well as a breakout area for classes that visit the library. With the use of the new iPads and apps, students are able to work on robot coding kits as well as additional STEM projects.

We have seen positive benefits of the elementary makerspace that we were able to create through a grant last year for our students and are excited to provide this for our junior/senior high school students as well,” said David J. Glover, Ed. D, Salem Central School District Superintendent.
